Fruitful Economics
Farmer David Mwesige, 29, checks on his pineapple patch at his farm in the Katooke village of western Uganda. David was able to purchase the pineapple seeds with the help of a loan from the village’s Saving and Internal Lending (SILC) group. Catholic Relief Services’ microfinance program helps meet the needs of the very poor, in remote, rural communities where there is little or no access to formal banking credit. David has so far received 5 loans through his village savings and lending group and also grows sugarcane and coffee.
