It was nice you recently acknowledged Norman Borlaug, the father of the Green Revolution that lifted millions of people, mostly in Asia, out of hunger through the production of high-yield varieties of wheat to commemorate this year's World Food Day...but that's just a first step...

We as Catholics need to catch up with the rest of the world and step up our own efforts to stamp out world hunger...Most Catholics
don't realize that it takes 60 times the amount of grain it would take to feed several people per year, to feed one cow.

My friend who is a priest, said that slaughterhouses are the closest thing he's seen to mortal sin. The conditions for the animals are abominable.
The animals fear for their lives, and when we ingest them, we ingest their fear...

It is possible to gain all the nutrients we need be eating vegetarian and refraining from slaughtering animals...which also contributes to desertification, climate change and global warming. Much of the cattle that is raised in South America is done so at the expense of the Amazon Rainforest, which has fallen victim to slash and burn tactics of cattle ranchers. I would feel better about giving more often to CRS if I knew they were educating Catholics on how their diet impacts world hunger and negative weather patters.
Meat is no longer an option...try going vegetarian...it's healthier...

[Editor's note: Brenda, here's a couple Catholic sites that touch on your concerns: Catholics Confront Global Poverty and Catholic Climate Covenant.]
