Monday, October 26th, 2009

As Catholics, we recognize that prayer is of the utmost importance, an invaluable contribution to helping the poor overseas. We invite you to join us in bringing to Our Lord the following intentions and thanks.

Storm Recovery: Father, look with love on the people of the Philippines, Vietnam and Cambodia, who have been devastated by Typhoon Ketsana. Receive those who have died into your arms of mercy. By the power of your Holy Spirit breathe new life into the people that are most vulnerable during this emergency time of recovery. As you provided the ark and the animals for Noah and his family in the flood, please provide our brothers and sisters in the Asia-Pacific region with food and shelter.

May the work of Catholic Relief Services assist the thousands of families who are in immediate need of food aid—rice, canned goods, noodles and vegetable oil—as well as emergency supplies such as blankets, mosquito nets, sleeping mats, soap and more. Lord Jesus, our Good Shepherd, please continue to protect them from any storms that continue to come their way.

Bishop Audo graciously arranged visits for Egan Award winners with Iraqi refugee families living in the northern city of Aleppo. Although the majority of Iraqi refugees are living in and around the capital of Damascus, Caritas is helping 800 Muslim and Christian Iraqi families in Aleppo.

After our meetings with the families, Bishop Audo took us to the roof of the church and explained the significance of the view – the church overlooks a neighboring mosque. The moment was especially poignant as the midday call to prayer began in the middle of his description of Christians and Muslims living together in peace in Syria.
