Caritas Internationalis President Cardinal Oscar Rodriguez Maradiaga will join world leaders at the United Nations Headquarters on September 25 to discuss ways to lift millions of people out of poverty.
U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon invited Cardinal Rodriguez to summit on Millennium Development Goals.
Drawn up in 2000, the development goals aim to significantly reduce poverty by 2015. Despite progress, current projections show goals in some countries are in peril, especially many in Africa. Climate change and the global food crisis threaten the success of development efforts.
Caritas said the summit will give world leaders an opportunity to track progress and commit to supplying resources to achieve goals in at-risk areas.

Through the trade fairs, which end in mid-October, 10 percent of all households in Lesotho will have accessed enough agricultural inputs –- including 385 tonnes of seed — to prepare and plant 17,500 hectares [43,243 acres] of land. An estimated 5,600 tonnes of maize, sorghum, beans and other crops are expected to be produced from this assistance.
