Vatican Signals Deeper New Media Involvement

“I think the church needs to enter into a dialogue that is increasingly rich and proactive, a dialogue of life with people who are seeking, who are distant and who would like to find a message that is closer and more suitable to their path,” said Archbishop Claudio Celli, president of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications, in this Catholic News Service story.

According to the story, “bishops from 82 countries began a five-day meeting in Rome March 9 to discuss modern media and the new culture of communications that has arisen in recent years.”

CNS said the “Vatican is considering the preparation of a major document on new media and their implications for the church’s communications strategy.”

Holy See Signs Cluster Munitions Convention

VATICAN CITY, 4 DEC 2008 (VIS) – Archbishop Dominique Mamberti, secretary for Relations with States yesterday participated in a ceremony, held in Oslo, Norway, to sign a Convention prohibiting the use, production, transfer and stockpiling of cluster munitions, the text of which was approved on 30 May in Dublin, Ireland.

VATICAN CITY, 13 NOV 2008 (VIS) – In the Holy See Press Office this morning, Cardinal Renato Martino, president of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, presented the programme of events planned to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The initiatives, organised by his dicastery, are due to be held in the Vatican on 10 December.
